A bible verse on discipline in 2022?
Do you struggle with disciplining yourself? What to eat, what not to eat? How much to eat and when to stop?
What not to say? Where and how to draw the line?
These situations are common for all of us on a daily.
It always comes down to self discipline. Are we able to control our minds, our thoughts, and our desires?
As a disciple of Jesus, you have power over everything and these bible verses on self discipline will provide a point of reference when these challenging situations arise.
Self discipline in the bible
2 Timothy 1:7
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
This bible verse on discipline is one of my favorite ones on this subject of self discipline in the bible. Many times we face circumstances when we feel as if we are not able to control ourselves, as if we have no control whatsoever over what we can do.
God gave us the spirit of self control. When you see yourself losing control it’s obviously a ploy from the devil. The devil is a liar always trying to make you feel that power is out of your hands. But that is not true!!!
The power to say yes or no is always in your hands and you can always determine the outcome of the situations around you. So ladies resist that lying devil and remind him that you have the power of self control.
You can say no just as you can say yes.
Hebrews 12:11
No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward, there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.
What Self discipline in the bible highlights is the fact that generally while you discipline yourself it is not enjoyable, discipline is never fun.
In fact, the bible says that it is hard, sad, and painful. But after you have mastered it and have reached the state of being disciplined, you can then reap the rewards of it.
This bible verse on discipline says that the benefits of self discipline that you reap after the training include righteousness, that is right standing with God, and a lifestyle and attitude that seeks to conform to God’s will and purpose.
So sis, remember what you get after that gruesome process of putting yourself through the practice of being disciplined. You will be walking in righteousness and holiness as you will now be able to say NO to the things that God despises.
1 Corinthians 9:27
But [like a boxer] I strictly discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached [the gospel] to others, I myself will not somehow be disqualified [as unfit for service].
This bible verse on discipline is a pretty epic one. Paul, who wrote most of the new testament also had to discipline himself. Weird right, to imagine the man who had such intense encounters with God also needing to discipline himself.
But yes no man is immune to the lusts of the flesh. We all still have these sinful bodies and they are constantly at war with what our spirit man wants.
So we must always be on the lookout to discipline ourselves. Self discipline in the bible was described as something that we must all do. Even for the most spiritual ones among us.
Paul said that he had to discipline his body like an athlete or like a boxer and make his body his slave otherwise he also would find himself disqualified.
This shows us the consequences of lacking self discipline. It leads to potential disqualification. Even after having served God on earth but if you lack in terms of self discipline then that may be enough to have you disqualified.
So let us make our bodies slaves like Paul says. Athletes when preparing for matches eat certain types of food and abstain from other types. Then they also train to get into shape until they are ready to be in a match.
Likewise let us train our bodies, our stomachs, our minds, and our mouths. Train them rigorously in the gym until they get into good shape.
And what is a good shape? Aligning with what the word of God says. When that happens, and as well all know it training to be fit doesn’t happen overnight, we also have to be consistent and patient in training until all aspects of our lives are fitly aligned with the word of `god.
Titus 1:8
But hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.
Self discipline in the bible as reflected by Titus is or must be a characteristic of church elders, leaders, or anyone in the kingdom of God.
Along with being hospitable, loving what is good and sensible, being fair and devout, a follower of Jesus must also be self disciplined.
The amplified version says being self disciplined is being above reproach whether in public or in private.
So self discipline must not be for show. Saying oh I do not do these things as lip service but in private you do these things. Let us not be hypocrites. Self discipline is being committed to conforming to the word of God and correcting yourself when you see yourself failing.
Self discipline is an ongoing process that we must always be on the lookout for, lest like Paul said, we get disqualified on that last day.
Proverbs 25:28
A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
This bible verse about discipline clearly shows how people perceive you when you are someone who does whatever you want.
When you lack self discipline, it means that you are unpredictable, unreliable, and untrustworthy. You can do anything since nothing is sacred to you.
When you lack self discipline you are like a city that no longer has protection- its walls have fallen down leaving it unprotected and exposed.
Being exposed and lacking self discipline implies you can easily do anything which may land you in trouble. So naturally, people do not want to be associated with someone like that as that can also land them in trouble by association.
So beloved sister, practice self discipline and you will become someone that people can count on. You don’t want to be that person who people can not trust to step in for them when they need them because in that way you also won’t have people being there for you.
Bible verses on the discipline of a child
Proverbs 23:13
Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.
This bible verse on discipline of a child is a very controversial one in this modern day where children have all the rights in the world. Parents are no longer allowed to discipline their children for fear of being labeled as abusive.
Subsequently , they just let their kids do as they please as they are afraid of the repercussions of disciplining them.
But this bible verse on discipline tells us that kids must be spanked every now and then. Obviously, this must be done lovingly not abusively.
I get that some parents can not draw the line between love and violence leading to abuse that is why it is best to steer clear of spanking in the first place.
But when these kids know that parents are not allowed to spank them. They indeed end up doing whatever they want engaging in sin. And that will be detrimental to their lives and those of us as parents.
We are the custodians of these children here on earth since they belong to God. We must therefore do our job diligently. Do what the owner of those kids says we need to do in teams of disciplining them.
Proverbs 29:17
Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.
This bible verse on discipline is a practical bible verse on the discipline of a child. It clearly shows the benefits of having a disciplined child.
When a child is disciplined, that gives you peace and rest as a mother and leads to family unity.
On the other hand, when your child lacks discipline and is always in trouble you are always stressed and worried. And let’s face it a child who misbehaves is disappointing.
Children are gifts from God and are supposed to bring joy and light to our lives. But when they bring sorrow and misery then that is going against the reason for which God gave us these kids.
So to enjoy the benefits thereof, mammas, please discipline your kids.
Do not shy away from discipline. And I know that as single parents it’s twice as hard to discipline them as we are both the mum and the dad.
But we have the Holy Spirit always to refer to for assistance and guidance lest we stray also in giving that discipline.
Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
This bible also instructs us as mamas on how we are supposed to raise our children. We are supposed to raise them in a way that is non-provocative. Not taking advantage of the fact that they are helpless and defenseless kids.
Instead, we must raise them with love as well as discipline them in the way and the instruction of the Lord. Disciplining kids is a sign of love.
When you discipline children you show them that you love them because you want them to be good and not to be destroyed.
If you let your kids be by spoiling them, that is absolutely not love.
A simple example is that you will see your kids doing drugs. And you let them be because you love them forgetting that these drugs will destroy their lives and cut their lives halfway.
But, when you discipline them, punish them then that is an act of love. Because you are looking out for them and do not want them to die.
So mamas let us not provoke our kids but raise them in the instruction of the Lord.
Proverbs 12:1
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
This bible verse on discipline reflects what self discipline in the bible really is. Think about this, some people naturally refuse to discipline any area of their lives.
They are convinced that what they are doing is just fine and that their way is the best.
These people according to the bible are fools. Are you a fool my sister? Do you refuse to be disciplined or criticized for your shortcomings? Do you think that it must be your way or the highway? If this is your way of thinking then you are a fool. Do not be foolish.
Be wise and let the love of God improve and make you more into the image of Christ and be less like yourself. No one is perfect.
Spiritual discipline bible verse
1 Peter 5:8
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Only self discipline can help you attain spiritual discipline. The devil is always prowling around, literally waiting for you to lose control of what you say or do. Thereby leading you into sin which automatically gives him the legal right over your life.
As we know, a curse without a cause can not land but also on the other hand the bible says to not give any room to the enemy lest he has an advantage over you.
This advantage over you is the legal right that becomes a result of sin and we all know that sin comes from carnality and succumbing to fleshly desires.
So resisting the devil, resisting sin, and remaining disciplined is not only obeying the word of God but is also a way of protecting yourself from attacks from the devil.
An example is that you watch porn and then you open doors to the spirit of lust and that spirit starts tormenting you. So, in essence, this spiritual discipline bible verse highlights the advantages of self discipline in also protecting yourself.
I personally vowed to never practice willful sin, not if I can help it. More for the reason of literally giving the devil no foothold over my life.
I will never give him an advantage over my life. Let the fights continue but not on my watch devil, I will strive to be disciplined at all times lest I open doors for him.
James 5:19-20
My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
This spiritual discipline bible verse reflects our role as fellow Christians in helping our kin to also attain self discipline. This bible verse on discipline tells us that we must restore wandering believers.
We must literally be our sister’s keepers. Sometimes people give in to temptation and start going down the rabbit hole. Instead of judging, abandoning and condemning them, we must help bring them back to the truth by disciplining them according to what the word of God says.
The bible says that when you discipline a fellow believer, and help bring back the wandering sister to the truth. You would have saved them from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.
So beloved, do not withhold discipline also to fellow believers for the fear of how they will respond to your discipline.
Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you embark on this task and you never know. They may actually accept the disciplining action and subsequently return to the truth of where they need to be.
And if they don’t take to it nicely, then OK, at least you would have done your part, leave the rest to God.
Hebrews 12:5-6
And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
Ok so when the Lord disciplines us we ought not to lose heart, by being annoyed, or just being set off. We must take and accept criticism and accept that no one knows it all and we are all students of the spirit.
The ways that the Lord disciplines can be through his word, you read the word and it clearly tells you to stop doing whatever you are doing- take it at face value.
Do not try to twist the truth into what you want. Accept the correction and pray that the Holy Spirit helps you become a better version of yourself.
The Lord can also discipline you through other church leaders, through sermons, and through fellow believers who as we read in the previous spiritual discipline, bible verses are supposed to also restore wandering believers.
So regardless of how the discipline is coming to us, we must be happy that God loves us enough to discipline us. The bible says that in the end, God will give them over to their selfish beliefs and reprobate minds.
These people are those that the Lord sees as having hardened hearts. Hearts that can no longer be open to discipline or correction. And God will let them believe whatever they want – whether it’s the truth of the gospel or the lies of the devil.
So when you still see that the Lord is correcting you the bible says that God corrects those he loves.
Rejoice at this correction and bask in the idea that God loves you. If he didn’t he would not waste his time on you.
But because he loves you, he wants you to be the best version of yourself and strive for Christlikeness.
So sisters, submit to correction for the purpose of discipline. God is dealing with you as his children. The same way you mamas discipline your children because you love them is the way God as a loving father desires to correct us.
2 Timothy 2:15
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
This spiritual discipline bible verse teaches us to be diligent and work hard to present ourselves as approved followers of Jesus. Who have been tested by trial but has no reason to be ashamed as he has resisted the devil. Crucified his flesh by denying himself of all carnal things that will lead to faltering om n self discipline and giving in to sin.
Obviously, God loves us, we can not do anything for him to love us any more or any less, but this bible verse on discipline is saying that we must go an extra mile to show God that we are ready to accurately handle and skillfully teach the word of truth.
And all of this comes as a result of self discipline. When we discipline ourselves and show God that we can remain steadfast and firm on our beliefs then he will certainly trust us.
Bible verses about discipline and hard work
Proverbs 18:9
Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys.
This bible verse about discipline and hard work teaches us to be diligent in our work. This bible verse on discipline says that a lazy person who does not care about working hard or see the importance of working is as bad as someone who destroys things.
When someone finds you a job, we all know how tight the economy is right now, the least you can do is work hard to keep that job.
But if you are lazy, come to work late, and basically do not care about keeping that job then you will obviously lose that job and destroy your chance of making it.
So let us be diligent in everything that we do. Not only on the spiritual side but also in our day-to-day lives and remember to do everything unto the Lord.
Work hard, be disciplined, meet your standards, and come to work on time and that will give glory to our father in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 3:10-12
For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now, such persons, we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.
This Bible Verses About Discipline And Hard Work clearly shows the value of discipline and hard work. If you do not work you do not eat.
How do you expect to eat when you do not work to earn your food? Even the bible speaks against laziness. I know that as single mamas it may be hard to work as well as get daycare for our kids so some may want to resort to staying at home and living off of benefits from the government.
But sis listen to what the word of God says in this bible verse about discipline. If you are not willing to work then you can not eat.
You need to earn your meal by working. Try to arrange daycare with parents, and friends or find some help from fellow church members if the government does not help with that sort of thing for single parents.
This is being disciplined and following what the word of God says.
Proverbs 12:11
Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.
This bible verse about discipline and hard work is a true reflection on how to be successful and see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
A person who works hard has plenty of food, the bible says. But he who chases fantasies and follows worthless pursuits has no sense.
We have those people in our society who are always planning the next big business idea. They are always planning and talking but never implement anything.
But the word of God says when you follow these senseless pursuits you are senseless and you will achieve nothing. So ladies, more action and less talking.
Faith without works is dead. It’s good to have faith, to see God blessing you in your big business idea, but do it. Start it and you will get rewards.
